CP Records BIO

CP Records, formerly known as Capital Prophet Records was formed in Ottawa, Canada in 2002 by current CEO Tony Sal and Recording artist/ VP Belly a.k.a. Rebellyus. A primary focus of CP Records is artist development and longevity in the business. “These days people have to fall in love with the artists, not just the songs,” Tony Sal reveals. “We’re a machine, we go hard. Our artists can depend on us to know the right decisions and that we will support them 150% in everything they do,” he says with confidence. Since 2005, CP Records have positioned themselves as the leading independent record label in the country, with releases from Juno award winning rapper Belly, R&B crooner Massari to Canada’s leading pop superstar, Danny Fernandes. They have not only brought dreams to life for their recording artists, but have created an entire new plateau for musicians nationally and internationally. CP Records’ first release, Massari became an R&B sensation in Canada and abroad in 2005 when he released his self-titled debut album, attaining distribution in over 40 countries worldwide including Australia, Eastern Europe, Portugal, UK, and producing four Top 40 singles spending as much as 24 weeks on the chart. It earned 7 MuchMusic Video Award nominations [won Best Pop Video in 2006] as well a Juno Award nomination for best album of the year. Massari reached platinum sales in Canada and sold close to half a million worldwide, making the young crooner an R&B icon. In early 2007, Massari and CP Records came to a mutual agreement to dissolve their relationship. A cornerstone in the CP Records family and part of the A&R executive structure, Belly has played an important role in the development of the label and its artists [7 of the singles he wrote went #1.] His creative expertise and input runs the gamut, providing vocals, songwriting and production skills to all CP recordings. As an artist himself, Belly has released 4 highly successful mixtapes, a number one gold selling album in Canada and countless top ten singles. His debut album The Revolution, which came out in 2007 earned him a Juno award in 2008 and two MuchMusic Video Awards. Belly is now working on his second album SE7EN with producers, Jim Jonsin, Hugo Diaz, Whosane?, Danny Boy, Da Heala and more. His first single “Hot Girl” ft. Snoop Dogg has been burning the airwaves with heavy rotation play on MuchMusic. In early 2008, CP signed Danny Fernandes, brother of Canadian icon Shawn Desman. An accomplished dancer since the age of 6, Danny had already toured with the likes of Aaron Carter, Blackstreet, Deborah Cox and his brother Shawn Desman prior to his deal with CP Records. His debut album Intro was released in October 2008, and quickly grew to become a fan favorite, spawning 2 gold singles and 5 MMVA nominations. “Private Dancer” and “Fantasy” also reached #1 on the MuchMusic countdown, solidifying Danny Fernandes as Canada’s newest pop star. CP Records is also the new proud home of Canadian songstress, Ivana Santilli who signed with the label in 2009. Ivana burst onto the music scene while still a teenager as a member of the soul/funk group Bass is Base releasing two successful and critically acclaimed albums with the group and one solo album. Ivana’s first single with CP “Your Girl Tonight,” co-written with label mate Belly and producer Da Heala, brings fans the same Ivana they fell in love with…reinvented. She is a timeless stunner. “A special artist,” CEO Tony Sal expresses. Ivana has toured with the likes of The Roots, De La Soul, James Brown and one of her personal favorites, Jamiroquai. Her current single “Confused Lil’ Boy” is dominating the airwaves and creating incredible attention. Ivana Santilli’s latest album Santilli is being recorded and set for release in 2010.Recently, CP Records has expanded their roster by signing a multitude of musicians including rock artist Chris Labelle, soul singer Mia Martina and Vancouver raised rapper DY. “Canada is so multicultural and we want our roster to reflect the diversity we embrace musically. From 2008 forward, we have opened our ears a little more to just good music overall; in all genres.” CP Records was created on a dream that was fueled by passion for music. Today they continue to build on that same dream one artist at a time.

Cash will be speaking as a panelist at the Urban Music Industry Conference on Friday, January 29 from 4:00pm - 5:30pm.
